This weekend is the beginning of San Francisco’s Open Studios. If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, may I suggest you support your local artists. Buying and living with real art is one of the simple things you can do to improve the quality of your life. We all live with lots of digital artifacts— but that’s not the same as a unique piece of art. Drop by Atelier 781 and see three wonderful artists.

I have a vested interest in introducing people to the idea of owning art. I like articles like this one on Reading Paintings. It brings art within reach. But I’d like an extension of the concept to art that you can buy and live with. It’s one thing to read a painting in a museum, it’s another to live with art and read it deeply over time.
One CommentMasterpieces of the cinema are entering the public domain. There’s great promise for the creation mashups and quotation. Nosferatu has already had many new scores written for it. I remember going to an art movie house to see this film. It was a great rarity. Now you can watch the whole film on echovar.

Some worked out better than others. Some time will have to pass before he’s properly remembered. The recent past puts a strange spin on his career. For those who don’t really know his accomplishments, they only remember their puzzlement at the opera singer trying his hand at popular music.
One of my favorite pop songs, although my preference is for the version by Chris Whitley on Perfect Day. What strange collaboration, in some ways it’s very New York: Pavarotti and Lou Reed.
