Bosworth leaves Google

Red Cross

This was news to me. Adam Bosworth is leaving Google. One doesn’t hear about people leaving Google too often, they’ve been like the black hole of the valley— sucking all the area’s talent into their campus.

For some reason, I felt that the Health problem needed a guy like Adam Bosworth. It’s a very tough problem that needs a smart guy to work on it. I wonder if the politics of “health” will make any real progress impossible.

I suppose it’s an inflection point for Google. There was a time when all talent sought Google. Apparently there are now more desirable destinations. I used to care, but things have changed.

iPhone & Spam

I’ve been setting up my new iPhone. There’s a lot to like. But the lack of spam filters on the email client is a major problem for anyone who’s been using email for a while. There are hacks, but that’s not what’s needed.

The email ecosystem has been trashed. It’s a system in crisis.

Google Apps: Classic Innovator’s Dilemna

I suppose this has been noted before, but Microsoft Office overserves its users. It has too many features that no one uses. It has features that no one even knows about. If an MS Word feature falls in the woods, and no one hears it, does it make a sound? This is a classic Innovator’s Dilemna.

It’s easy to say that Google apps is not as good as Microsoft Office. But that’s an answer to the wrong question. The question is: is it good enough, for a lot less money. The folks at CapGemini seem to think so. It’ll cost a company $50 per year per employee for Google Apps. Microsoft will counter with Microsoft Live, but they don’t what to cannibalize their own product. Which means they leave the field open to Google Apps and Zoho. Speaking of Zoho, you’d think Yahoo or somebody would buy them.

Counter Culture

Vetrazzo counter milefiori

If you’ve ever spent a Sunday looking at real estate open houses, you’ll see the depressing sight of the omnipresent kitchen granite table top. It’s the upscale meme that has spread like a virus. If you don’t know about Vetrazzo, and you’re thinking about new countertops. You need to get out and see this stuff. Vertrazzo is 100% recycled glass, we’re talking old traffic lights, windshields, bottles, etc. Each of the styles has a story about the origin of the glass.

Vetrazzo has created a green business, and that’s great, but it’s the beauty of the product that really matters. Check it out.
